ABSTRACT

Abstract Ferns are often used by indigenous people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. This study was designed to collect the ethnomedicinal and traditional knowledge of these locals about this group of vascular plants. Forty taxa belong to nineteen genera and ten families are used in the treatment of different diseases. The Pteridaceae was the most representative family with twelve taxa (30%), followed by Athyriaceae and Dryopteridaceae with six taxa each (30%), and Thelypteridaceae with five taxa (12.5%). Regarding the genera, Adiantum, Asplenium and Dryopteris ranked first with four taxa each (30%), followed by Aleuritopteris, Diplazium, Pteris and Equisetum with three taxa each (30%), followed by Athyrium, Oeosporangium, Polystichum and Pseudophegopteris with two taxa each (20%). These taxa were commonly used in the treatment of respiratory disorders i.e. asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, pneumonia; intestinal ulcer, stomach, urinary ailments and skin disorders by the methods of decoction and infusion. Traditional knowledge about ethnomedicinal plants is a valuable and essential source for the discovery of allopathic, herbal and homeopathic medicines.


Resumo As samambaias são frequentemente usadas pelos indígenas em Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Paquistão. Este estudo foi desenhado para coletar o conhecimento etnomedicinal e tradicional desses moradores sobre este grupo de plantas vasculares. Quarenta táxons pertencem a dezenove gêneros, e dez famílias são utilizadas no tratamento de diferentes doenças. Pteridaceae foi a família mais representativa com doze táxons (30%), seguida por Athyriaceae e Dryopteridaceae com seis táxons cada (30%), e Thelypteridaceae com cinco táxons (12,5%). Em relação aos gêneros, Adiantum, Asplenium e Dryopteris ficaram em primeiro lugar com quatro táxons cada (30%), seguidos por Aleuritopteris, Diplazium, Pteris e Equisetum com três táxons cada (30%), e Athyrium, Oeosporangium, Polystichum e Pseudophegopteris com dois táxons cada (20%). Estes táxons foram comumente usados no tratamento de distúrbios respiratórios, isto é, asma, bronquite, enfisema, pneumonia; úlcera intestinal, estômago, doenças urinárias e doenças da pele pelos métodos de decocção e infusão. O conhecimento tradicional sobre plantas etnomedicinais é uma fonte valiosa e essencial para a descoberta de medicamentos alopáticos, fitoterápicos e homeopáticos.

Resumen Los helechos y licófitos mencionados en El mundo Vegetal de los Andes peruanos de Weberbauer brindan una breve información de su riqueza y sustento a las observaciones ambientales para cada categoría de su esquema fitogeográfico del Perú. Este estudio actualiza tanto el concepto y características de los pteridofitos mencionados en el capítulo Unidades Sistemáticas, como la nomenclatura de los 126 nombres de los taxones mencionados en la obra. Además, se ofrece una breve historia del estudio del grupo en el Perú, para proveer el contexto de la inclusión de estas plantas por Weberbauer. Y se mencionan las colecciones que Weberbauer realizara del grupo y, en particular, las citadas como ejemplos. Se ofrece un perfil de las tareas por realizar para completar la labor biogeográfica iniciada por Weberbauer.


Abstract Ferns and lycophytes were mentioned by Weberbauer in his El mundo Vegetal de los Andes peruanos to provide a hint of the richness of the group and to support his natural history observations for each category of his phytogeographic description of Peru. This contribution updates concepts and features of these plants as discussed in the chapter on "Systematic Units" and updates the 126 names of taxa cited in his book. To this end, we provide a brief history of the development of Peru's pteridoflora studies in the context of Weberbauer's work. We also document Weberbauer's pteridophyte collections linked to the verification of the taxa of his examples. A framework for future research is provided to complete the biogeographic endeavor that begun with his work and highlights the need to relocate his plant collections as witnesses of his legacy.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Tree ferns are significant components of temperate, tropical and subtropical forests, contributing to shape complex forest stand structures. Objectives: 1) to describe the population structure of Cyathea costaricensis in a remnant cloud forest of West-central Mexico; 2) to characterize and relate the floristic composition and the structure of the most important tree species associated to the C. costaricensis population and; 3) to describe the environment where C. costaricensis occurs. Methods: We estimated the Importance Value Index (IVI) to select the most important canopy-dominant species associated to C. costaricensis; we constructed height and Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) frequency distributions for those selected species according to IVI as well as for C. costaricensis population; we computed the asymmetry of the frequency distributions through the coefficient of skewness and the probability density function via the Kernel density estimation. We tested for differences between canopy-dominant tree species and C. costaricensis population structure by the non-parametric Wilcoxon rank sum test. Results: C. costaricensis individuals presented the smallest heights and intermediate DBH sizes as compared with the canopy-dominant species, with statistically significant differences for height but not for DBH according to the Wilcoxon test. Most of the tree fern individuals were located in uneven terrains and over the base slope of the terrain; canopy openness and Total Radiation Under the Canopy values were similar to those reported for Cyathea species elsewhere. Conclusions: We confirm the hypothesis of comparable structure between the canopy-dominant species and the C. costaricensis population only for DBH; on the contrary, for trunk height, there were statistically significant differences; the small heights of C. costaricensis suggest their coexistence in the understory through sheltering from the taller canopy-dominants. Mostly all individuals of C. costaricensis were confined to local environmental conditions, particularly to physiography.


Resumen Introducción: Los helechos arborescentes son componentes importantes de los bosques templados, tropicales y subtropicales, que contribuyen a dar forma a rodales de estructuras complejas. Objetivos: 1) Describir la estructura poblacional de Cyathea costaricensis en un remanente de bosque nuboso del centro-oeste de México; 2) Caracterizar y relacionar la composición florística y la estructura de las especies arbóreas más importantes asociadas a la población de C. costaricensis y; 3) Describir el ambiente donde se encuentra C. costaricensis. Métodos: Estimamos el Índice de Valor de Importancia (IVI) para seleccionar las especies dominantes más importantes del dosel asociadas a C. costaricensis; para las especies seleccionadas según IVI, construimos distribuciones de frecuencia de alturas y diámetros a la altura del pecho (DAP), así como para la población de C. costaricensis. Calculamos la asimetría de las distribuciones de frecuencia a través del coeficiente de asimetría y la función de densidad de probabilidad mediante la estimación de densidad de Kernel. Probamos las diferencias entre las especies de árboles dominantes en el dosel y la estructura de la población de C. costaricensis mediante la prueba no paramétrica de suma de rangos de Wilcoxon. Resultados: los individuos de C. costaricensis presentaron las menores alturas y tamaños intermedios de DAP en comparación con las especies dominantes del dosel, con diferencias estadísticamente significativas para la altura, pero no para el DAP según la prueba de Wilcoxon. La mayoría de los individuos de helechos arborescentes se ubicaron en terrenos irregulares y sobre la pendiente baja del terreno. Los valores de apertura del dosel y Radiación total bajo el dosel fueron similares a los reportados para las especies de Cyathea en otros lugares. Conclusiones: Confirmamos la hipótesis de que hay una estructura similar entre las especies dominantes del dosel y la población de C. costaricensis solo para el DAP; por el contrario, para la altura del fuste, hubo diferencias estadísticamente significativas; las pequeñas alturas de C. costaricensis sugieren su coexistencia en el sotobosque a través de la cobertura árboles dominantes del dosel. La mayoría de los individuos de C. costaricensis fueron encontrados confinados a condiciones ambientales locales, en particular a la fisiografía.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Jamesonia is a genus of Neotropical ferns that comprises about 50 species, distributed from Mexico to Uruguay. In spite of this wide distribution, this group is more diverse in Andean páramos and subpáramos. Due to the recent changes in its circumscription, with the junction of Eriosorus and segregation of Tryonia, the objective of this work was to carry out the taxonomic study of Jamesonia for Brazil, in order to elaborate its monograph to the Flora of Brazil 2020. This study was based on morphological analyses of specimens deposited in 25 Brazilian herbaria, plus online images of types, field expeditions in the southern and southeastern regions of Brazil, revision of the literature, and scanning electronic microscopy of the spores. Seven species and two hybrids were recognized: J. biardii, J. brasiliensis, J. cheilanthoides, J. flexuosa, J. insignis, J. osteniana, J. rufescens, J. brasiliensis × J. cheilanthoides, and J. ×intermedia, respectively. A distinct specimen, from the border of Brazil (Amazonas) and Venezuela, was treated as Jamesonia sp., due to the presence of only one material. Identification key, descriptions and illustrations are provided for the species and hybrids, as well as, geographical distribution data, comments, list of selected material examined for each taxon, and a full list of all exsiccatae analyzed. We also present an identification key for the genera Jamesonia and Tryonia.


Resumo: Jamesonia é um gênero de samambaias Neotropical, que compreende cerca de 50 espécies, distribuídas do México ao Uruguai. Apesar dessa ampla distribuição, o grupo é mais diverso nos páramos e subpáramos andinos. Devido às recentes mudanças na sua circunscrição, com a junção de Eriosorus e a segregação de Tryonia, o objetivo desse trabalho foi realizar o estudo taxonômico de Jamesonia para o Brasil, a fim de elaborar sua monografia para a Flora do Brasil 2020. Esse estudo foi baseado na análise morfológica de espécimes depositados em 25 herbários nacionais, mais imagens dos tipos online, expedições de campo para as regiões sul e sudeste do Brasil, revisão de literatura, e microscopia eletrônica de varredura dos esporos. Sete espécies e dois híbridos foram reconhecidos: J. biardii, J. brasiliensis, J. cheilanthoides, J. flexuosa, J. insignis, J. osteniana, J. rufescens, J. brasiliensis × J. cheilanthoides e J. ×intermedia, respectivamente. Um espécime distinto, oriundo da fronteira do Brasil (Amazonas) com a Venezuela, foi tratado como Jamesonia sp., devido à presença de somente um material. Chaves de identificação, descrições e ilustrações foram apresentadas para as espécies e híbridos, bem como, dados de distribuição geográfica, comentários, lista de material selecionado examinado para cada táxon e uma lista contendo todas as exsicatas analisadas. Nós também apresentamos uma chave de identificação para os gêneros Jamesonia e Tryonia.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Adiantum is a Pantropical genus of ferns, monophyletic, and has about 225 species. It can be recognized by the indusia with veins, bearing sporangia directly on the underside of its reflexed tissue. About 110 species occur in the Neotropical region and 65 of them are reported to Brazil. Among them, 64 are native species and occur mainly in the Amazon Rainforest, Caatinga, Central Brazilian Savanna, and in the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. Among the species that occur in Brazil, 16 are endemic and they represent 25% of the total. This paper presents a key to identify the 63 native species of Adiantum in Brazil, excluding the hybrid one. Illustrations of some morphological features, as well as of all species are also presented to help in the process of identification.


Resumo: Adiantum é um gênero Pantropical de samambaias, monofilético e com cerca de 225 espécies. Pode ser reconhecido pelos indúsios com nervuras e esporângios formados diretamente sobre a face inferior do seu tecido reflexo. Aproximadamente 110 espécies ocorrem na região Neotropical e 65 delas são registradas para o Brasil. Entre elas, 64 são espécies nativas e ocorrem principalmente na Floresta Amazônica, Caatinga, nas vegetações abertas do Brasil Central e na Floresta Atlântica Brasileira. Entre a espécies que ocorrem no Brasil, 16 são endêmicas e elas representam 25% do total. Este trabalho apresenta uma chave para identificação das 63 espécies nativas de Adiantum no Brasil, excluindo o híbrido. Também são apresentadas ilustrações de alguns caracteres morfológicos, bem como de todas as espécies para ajudar no processo de identificação.

Introducción: La alteración en la composición y estructura de la vegetación da paso a la introducción de especies consideradas invasoras, caso de Pteridium arachnoideum, que, por sus características de crecimiento por reproducción asexual y efecto alelopático, puede colonizar rápidamente; tal capacidad de invasión, inhibe los procesos de sucesión natural, permite el dominio de especies herbáceas y disminuye la diversidad de especies arbóreas. Objetivo: Evaluar la vegetación asociada a los helechales (P. esculentum subsp. arachnoideum x P. esculentum subsp. campestre) distribuidos en la zona denominada Golconda, ubicada en el Parque Nacional Natural Serranía de Los Yariguíes. Métodos: Se realizaron 15 parcelas de 25 m2 cada una; en ellas, se tomaron datos de composición y fisonomía de la vegetación [formas de crecimiento, altura (m), cobertura (m2), diámetro a la altura del pecho (DAP) para todos los árboles y abundancia de especies]; se estimaron índices de probabilidad de diversidad (Shannon y Simpson), el porcentaje de especies y abundancia por formas de crecimiento, IVI para especies arbóreas y arbustivas, IVR para herbáceas y el esfuerzo de muestreo. Resultados: Se registraron 924 individuos pertenecientes a 65 especies, distribuidas en 24 familias; las taxa más ricas son: Melastomataceae, Asteraceae y Poaceae, consideradas frecuentes en áreas perturbadas. Las áreas dominadas por helechales son diversas, a pesar de la dominancia de especies como: Ageratina cf. fastigiata, Tibouchina lindeniana, Clethra fagifolia, Coccocypselum lanceolatum y Clidemiaciliata; se identificaron 30 especies leñosas y 21 herbáceas. Conclusiones: Con especies leñosas pioneras que favorecen la sucesión, así como, taxones provenientes de áreas conservadas de interior de bosque, este estudio contribuye en la reevaluación del atributo de P. esculentum subsp. arachnoideum x P. esculentum subsp. campestre como inhibidora y causante de la disminución de la diversidad por su dominancia.


Introduction: Alteration of the composition and structure of natural vegetation allows the invasion of species. This occurs with Pteridium esculentum subsp. arachnoideum x Pteridium esculentum subsp. campestre, which due to its growth by asexual reproduction and allelopathic effect, can quickly colonize disturbed habitat inhibiting natural succession, allowing herbaceous species to dominate and reducing tree species diversity. Objective: Evaluate the vegetation associated with the bracken P. esculentum subsp. arachnoideum x P. esculentum subsp. campestre distributed in the area called Golconda, in the Yariguíes National Park, Colombia. Methods: 15 plots of 25 m2 each were established; in each plot the vegetation composition and physiognomy were registered [growth forms, height (m) as well as vegetation cover (m2), diameter at breast height (DBH) for all trees and species abundance]; diversity probability indexes (Shannon and Simpson), percentage of species and abundance of growth forms, IVI for tree and shrub species, IVR for herbs, and the sampling effort were estimated. Results: 924 individuals belonging to 65 species were registered; they were distributed in 24 families; the richest taxa are: Melastomataceae, Asteraceae and Poaceae, which are considered frequent in disturbed areas. The areas dominated by ferns are botanically diverse, despite the dominance of species such as Ageratina cf. fastigiata, Tibouchina lindeniana, Clethra fagifolia, Coccocypselum lanceolatum and Clidemia ciliata; 30 woody and 21 herbaceous species were identified. Conclusions: Given that pioneer woody species and taxa from preserved areas of forest interiors subserve succession, this study contributes to a reevaluation of P. esculentum subsp. arachnoideum x P. esculentum subsp. campestre as an inhibitor and cause of a decrease in diversity due to its dominance.

Lygodium Sw. is the only genus of the family Lygodiaceae, with around 25 to 40 species inhabiting mostly tropical regions worldwide. In Argentina two species develop; one of them, L. venustum, grows in the Northeast of the country. Some species of Lygodium are invasive whereas medicinal uses have been reported for some taxa. As part of a project to ascertain on the reproductive biology of native ferns in Argentina, a fungus was found during in vitro spore culture of L. venustum. Dark brown spots and eruptive pustules were also observed in fertile leaves. Thus, emerged as objectives of this work: 1) to retrieve and identify the fungus from the sporophyte and from the spores cultures, 2) to inquire on the impact of the fungus on gametophyte generation, and 3) to perform experiments with untreated spores to demonstrate that the fungus is associated to the spores collected from infested sporophytes. Phytopathological techniques were applied in order to isolate the fungus and then to achieve monosporic cultures. The morpho-biometric features of the conidia corresponded with those of Pestalotiopsis maculans (Corda) Nag Raj [= Pestalotiopsis guepinii (Desm.) Steyaert] (Amphisphaeriales, Ascomycota). Re-inoculation of conidia on healthy gametophytes conducted to their necrosis and death. The percentages of spore germination were initially higher in unsterilized cultures, suggesting that disinfection protocol may have affected spore germination. This is the first report of Pestalotiopsis maculans on the sporophytes of Lygodium venustum. The information that emerges from our work could be useful for the biocontrol of other species of Lygodium, considered weeds in other regions of the world.


Efectos del hongo Pestalotiopsis maculans (Ascomycota: Amphisphaeriales) en el desarrollo gametofítico del helecho Lygodium venustum (Lygodiaceae). Lygodium Sw. es el único género de la familia Lygodiaceae, con alrededor de 25 a 40 especies que habitan en su mayoría en regiones tropicales del mundo. En Argentina se desarrollan dos especies; uno de ellas, L. venustum, crece en el noreste del país. Algunas especies de Lygodium son invasivas, mientras que para algunos taxones se han reportado usos medicinales. Como parte de un proyecto para indagar sobre la biología reproductiva de los helechos nativos en Argentina, se encontró un hongo durante el cultivo in vitro de esporas de L. venustum. Asimismo, se observaron manchas marrones oscuras y pústulas eruptivas en hojas fértiles. Así, surgieron como objetivos de este trabajo: 1) recuperar e identificar el hongo presente en el esporofito y en los cultivos de esporas, 2) investigar el impacto del hongo en la generación gametofítica y 3) realizar experimentos con esporas no tratadas para demostrar que el hongo está asociado a las esporas recolectadas de esporofitos infestados. Se aplicaron técnicas fitopatológicas para aislar el hongo y luego lograr cultivos monospóricos. Las características morfo-biométricas de los conidios correspondieron a las de Pestalotiopsis maculans (Corda) Nag Raj [= Pestalotiopsis guepinii (Desm.) Steyaert] (Amphisphaeriales, Ascomycota). La re-inoculación de conidios en gametofitos sanos condujo a su necrosis y muerte. Los porcentajes de germinación de esporas fueron inicialmente más altos en los cultivos no esterilizados, lo que sugiere que el protocolo de desinfección pudo haber afectado la germinación de las esporas. Este es el primer reporte de Pestalotiopsis maculans sobre los esporofitos de Lygodium venustum. La información que surge de nuestro trabajo podría ser útil para el control biológico de otras especies de Lygodium, consideradas malezas en otras regiones del mundo.

ABSTRACT

We confirm the presence of Campyloneurum decurrens in the western side of South America based on herbarium collections. Specifically, we report three additional localities for its geographical range, two in Peru and one in Ecuador, and provide additional morphological information on this species. This report confirms a disjunction for this species between the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil and the lowland forests in the Peruvian Amazon, and in the Ecuadorean Choco.


Se confirma la presencia de Campyloneurum decurrens en el occidente de América del Sur en base a colecciones de herbario. Se reporta tres localidades adicionales para su distribución geográfica, dos en Perú y una en Ecuador y se provee de información morfológica adicional. Este reporte confirma también el patrón de disyunción entre la región del Bosque Atlántico en el sureste del Brasil y la de los bosques bajos de la amazonia peruana y del Chocó ecuatoriano.

Lycophytes and ferns are unique and charismatic members of many terrestrial ecosystems and occupy the pivotal position in land plant origin and evolution. The Chinese lycophytes and ferns flora, with approximately 2000 species, contributes a substantial component to the global lycophytes and ferns diversity, with estimates of 12 000 species. Among them, about 433 species are medicinally recorded and researches based on their phytochemical properties are important topics in natural medicines. This paper reviewed the research history and current status of chemical constituents and biological activities of lycophytes and ferns, which had highlighted the research progress of our group.

Resumen Pleopeltis macrocarpa y Microgramma mortoniana son dos helechos epífitos de la familia Polypodiaceae hallados con baja frecuencia en la Reserva Natural Punta Lara (Buenos Aires, Argentina). El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar la morfogénesis de gametófitos epífitos para fortalecer poblaciones vulnerables y contribuir a su conservación. Se recolectaron hojas fértiles. Las esporas se sembraron en placas de Petri con medio de cultivo Dyer. Las esporas se caracterizaron por ser monoletes, elipsoidales, amarillentas y con ornamentación verrucosa. La germinación fue del tipo Vittaria y el desarrollo del gametofito es del tipo Drynaria. El esporofito de P. macrocarpa surgió a los 500 días y el de M. mortoniana a los 120. El patrón de germinación, el desarrollo del gametofito, el glóbulo lipídico en la célula protálica y los pelos unicelulares capitados en el margen podrían considerarse en la sistemática del grupo. La demora en la formación de esporofitos a través de la reproducción sexual, permite inferir que el éxito de su propagación estaría sujeto a la reproducción vegetativa.


Abstract The Punta Lara Natural Reserve is located on the riverside of the La Plata River in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is the Southernmost relict in the world of subtropical riparian forest. The epiphytic ferns studied in this work belong to the Polypodiaceae family: Microgramma mortoniana and Pleopeltis macrocarpa. Plant communities are subject to high levels of anthropization and introduction of exotic species. The goals of this work are to provide information on the morphogenesis of epiphytic gametophytes and to extend knowledge of their life cycles, contributing to their conservation. Sowing was carried out in Dyer medium. In both species the spores are monolete, ellipsoidal, yellowish and with verrucate sculpture. The equatorial diameter is 60-61 μm, the polar diameter is 39-42 μm. The germination is the Vittaria type; in M. mortoniana occurs at 20 days, while in P. macrocarpa occurs at six days. The filaments are uniseriate of 3-6 cells in length. The gametophyte development is Drynaria type. The cordated form is given after 40 days. In M. mortoniana, buds originated after 40 days. In P. macrocarpa, after 120 days, clathrate trichomes scale-like appear mainly on the margins of the gametophyte. The gametangia are typical of leptosporangiate ferns. The sporophyte of M. mortoniana emerged after 120 days and that of P. macrocarpa arose after 500 days, its blades are simple, spatulate and unicellular and multicellular branching hairs were observed. The germination pattern, gametophyte development, the presence of a lipid globule in the prothalic cell and the formation of unicellular capitated hairs are relevant characters that could be considered for systematic group. The delay in the formation of sporophytes through sexual reproduction, allows us to infer that the success of their establishment in situ would be given by the vegetative reproduction through creeping rhizomes and buds of gametophytes. Abstract Acrostichum is a pantropical genus and has four species, two of which occur in the Neotropics, A. aureum and A. danaeifolium. In Mexico, A. danaeifolium grows further in land wet soils and is much more common than A. aureum, which is typically found in brackish or saline habitats near the coast, and is restricted to coastal saline mangrove communities. The purpose of this paper was to describe and compare the morphogenesis of the sexual phase of A. aureum and A. danaeifolium for systematic purposes. For this, spores of each species were sown in Petri dishes with agar, previously enriched with sterilized Thompson's medium. To avoid contamination and dehydration, the dishes were kept in transparent plastic bags under laboratory conditions. For the micro-morphological observation with SEM, the gametophyte development phases were fixed in FAA with 0.8 % sucrose for 24 h. Photomicrographs of spores, development stages of gametophytes and young sporophytes were observed with scanning electron microscope. Our results showed that the spores of both species are triletes, globose and positive photoblastic. Germination is Vittaria-type; the germinate filaments are short and uniseriate (5 to 7 cells), and prothallial development is Ceratopteris-type. The adult gametophytes of both species have asymmetrical wings. Adult gametophytes in culture are cordiform-spatulate. Antheridia have a broad basal cell, an annular cell, and an asymmetric opercular cell. Archegonia have short necks and four triangular cells at the mouth of the neck. The first leaf of the sporophyte is lobed, with dichotomous veins and anomocytic stomata. The gemmae are formed in adult gametophytes in both species. The development of the gametophyte of A. aureum, A. danaeifolium and A. speciosum share many similarities such as the development of a lateral meristem, asymmetric nature of the mature prothallus, lack of hairs on the prothallus, and undivided asymmetrical opercular antheridia morphology. The genus Acrostichum is the sister group of Ceratopteris, another genus of aquatic ferns; they differ in the antheridium morphology, Acrostichum has an asymmetric opercular cell and Ceratopteris shows an undivided cap cell, but the notable difference is the sporophyte morphology. Resumen Acrostichum es pantropical y tiene cuatro especies dos de las cuáles ocurren en el Neotrópico, A. aureum y A. danaeifolium. El género se encuentra típicamente en hábitats salobres o salinos cerca de la costa. También puede crecer más lejos en tierra en suelos húmedos. Acrostichum aureum está restringido a las comunidades de manglares salinos costeros. A. danaeifolium es mucho más común que A. aureum en México. El propósito de este trabajo es describir y comparar la morfogénesis de la fase sexual de A. aureum y A. danaeifolium. Las esporas de cada especie fueron sembradas en cajas de Petri, en agar previamente enriquecido con medio de Thompson esterilizado. Para evitar la contaminación y la deshidratación, las cajas se mantuvieron dentro de bolsas de plástico transparentes en condiciones de laboratorio. Para la observación micro-morfológica con el MEB, las fases de desarrollo del gametofito se fijaron en FAA con sacarosa al 0.8 % durante 24 h. Se observaron las esporas, fases de desarrollo de gametofitos y esporofitos jóvenes con un microscopio electrónico de barrido. Las esporas de ambas especies son triletes, globosas y fotoblásticas positivas. La germinación es tipo-Vittaria, los filamentos germinativos son cortos y uniseriados (5 a 7 células) y el desarrollo protálico es de tipo-Ceratopteris. Los gametofitos de ambas especies tienen alas asimétricas. Los gametofitos adultos en cultivo son cordiforme-espatulados. Los anteridios tienen una célula basal amplia, una célula anular y una célula opercular asimétrica. Los arquegonios tienen cuellos cortos y cuatro células triangulares en la boca del cuello. La primera hoja del esporofito es lobulada, con venación dicotómica y estomas anomocíticos. Las yemas se forman en gametofitos adultos en ambas especies. El desarrollo del gametofito de A. aureum, A. danaeifolium y A. speciosum comparten características tales como el desarrollo de un meristemo lateral, el protalo maduro de naturaleza asimétrica, ausencia de pelos en el protalo y anteridio con célula opercular asimétrica no dividida. Acrostichum es el grupo hermano de Ceratopteris, otro género de helecho acuático, que difieren en la morfología del anteridio, Acrostichum tiene una célula opercular asimétrica y Ceratopteris muestran una célula opercular no dividida.

ABSTRACT The genera of Dennstaedtiaceae have sporophytes with very different morphological characteristics between each other, and this feature has made difficult the systematic circumscription of the family. This reason makes necessary the study of new characters that allow a better understanding of the relations within the group. The spore morphology and wall structure of Blotiella lindeniana, Histiopteris incisa and Paesia glandulosa from the Paranaense Phytogeographic Province were studied using light microscope, and scanning and transmission electron microscope. The exospore has two layers and, according to the species, the exospore surface bears pila, echinae, verrucae, bacula and tubercles. The perispore has two or three layers and its surface is psilate, baculate or rugulate. The variability found in the sculpture of the spores and their stratification and ultrastructure of perispore reflects the morphological differences observed in the sporophyte of the species studied. Additionally, while the stratification and ultrastructure of the exospore is shared by the Dennstaedtiaceae species, their ornamentation could be a character to distinguish species into the clade "hypolepidoide". The finding of spores with similar characteristics in phylogenetically unrelated families allows us to suggest that palynological features do not have an evolutionary value to establish relationships between groups above the genus level.

ResumenLos helechos y licófitas son un grupo de plantas vasculares de interés para entender la evolución de las interacciones micorrízicas y su preservación es de relevancia por sus múltiples interacciones ecológicas. El registro de los diferentes grupos taxonómicos de hongos asociados a helechos y licófitas se encuentra fragmentado y el criterio para su diagnóstico inconsistente, lo que dificulta el entendimiento y la determinación del estatus micorrízico. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue conocer el porcentaje de especies de helechos y licófitas que tiene distribución en México de las que se tiene información sobre hongos endomicorrízicos. Se integró un listado de la presencia de hongos micorrízicos arbusculares (HMA), Mucoromycotina y hongos septados oscuros (HSO) asociados a helechos y licófitas, a través de una búsqueda exhaustiva de información. En este trabajo se consideró una especie micorrízica arbuscular, por los arbúsculos, para diferenciarla de la colonización por hifas, vesículas u ovillos. El estudio generó un listado de ocurrencia de interacciones endomicorrízicas en 27 familias, 61 géneros y 137 especies de helechos y licófitas, que representa el 13.37 % de las especies, 91 % de los géneros y 77 % de las familias registradas para México. El 78.1 % de las especies presentó colonización por hongos, el 56.2 % fueron por HMA, el 8.9 % solo presentó colonización por hifas, vesículas o coils, el 21.8 % fue por HSO y el 1. 4 % por hongos Mucoromycotina. Del total de especies, la mayor presencia de colonización se presentó en especies terrestres 76.59 %, saxícolas 33.33 %, acuáticas 20 % y epífitas con 6.25 %. Las familias de helechos y licófitas con mayor número de especies colonizadas fueron: Pteridaceae, Polypodiaceae, Aspleniaceae y Dryopteridaceae. El presente trabajo muestra que la asociación de HMA y HSO es la más ampliamente distribuida en las familias y especies de helechos y licófitas. Surge la necesidad de incluir a los helechos y licófitas en los estudios de interacciones endomicorrízicas ya que únicamente 28 especies (20 %) fueron estudiadas en ecosistemas de México. La mayoría de los estudios se enfocan en la fase esporofítica (80 %). Sin embargo, para entender el papel que juegan las micorrizas en el establecimiento de helechos y licófitas se requiere incluir a la fase gametofítica, así como estudios de ecología, biología molecular, así como trabajos experimentales de fisiología. La información presentada es de relevancia para implementar estrategias alternativas de conservación, debido a que muchas especies de helechos y licófitas requieren de la asociación micorrízica para su crecimiento y supervivencia.


AbstractFerns and lycophytes are a group of vascular plants of interest to understand the evolution of mycorrhizal interactions; their preservation is of relevance for their multiple ecological relations. The record of different taxonomic groups of fungi associated with ferns and lycophytes is fragmentary, and the criteria for it identification is inconsistent, which hinders the understanding and determination of mycorrhizal status. The aim of this study was to determine the percentage of the species of ferns and lycophytes with distribution in Mexico, and with information of fungal interactions. A checklist of the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), Mucoromycotina and dark septate fungi (DSF) associated with ferns and lycophytes was integrated through an exhaustive global literature search. In this study, mycorrhizal species was considered by the presence of arbuscules to differentiate with hyphal, vesicular and coils colonization. The study gathered a checklist of mycorrhizal occurrences of 27 families, 61 genus and 137 species of ferns and lycophytes, which covers 13.4 % of the species, 91 % of the genus and 77 % of the families distributed in Mexico. The 78.1 % of the species showed colonization, 56.2 % by AMF, 29.9 % by DSF and 0.72 % by Mucoromycotina fungi. From the total of the species, the higher presences of colonization were in terrestrial, epiphytic, saxicolous, and aquatic plants with 76.6 %, 33.3 %, 20 %, and 6.3 %, respectively. The families of ferns and lycophytes with the higher number of species colonized were Pteridaceae, Polypodiaceae, Aspleniaceae and Dryopteridaceae. The present study showed the widespread associations of AMF and DSF in ferns and lycophytes of Mexico. It is urgently needed to include ferns and lycophytes in studies focused on endomycorhizal interactions, since only 28 species (28 %) were studied in Mexican ecosystems. The majority of studies were focused on sporophytic face (80 %). Nonetheless, to understand the role that plays the mycorrhiza in the establishment of ferns and lycophytes, it is necessary to include the gametophytic face in ecological, molecular and physiological experimental studies. This information is important to implement conservation strategies, because a considerable number of ferns and lycophytes species, depend on these mycorrhizal associations for their growth and survival. Objective:To investigate the antifungal activity of the fern species Lygodium venustum (L.venustum) and Pityrogramma calomelanos (P.calomelanos) against Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis strains.Methods:The microdilution method was used to evaluate the antifungal activity,as well as the modulating effects of ethanolic extracts of these plants in combination with fluconazole.The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC),minimum fungicide concentration and morphological changes were also determined.Results:The extract obtained from L.venustum presented a MIC > 8192 μtg/mL,while the extract obtained from and P.calomelanos presented a MIC =8192 μtg/mL,indicating that they present weak antifungal activity.However,combination of the extracts with Fluconazole potentiated the antifungal activity of this drug.At different experimental conditions,such as concentration of the extract and type of strain,the extracts inhibited hyphae and pseudohyphae formation,indicating that these fern species can affect the morphology of the fungi.Conclusions:The extracts obtained from the fern species L.venustum and P.calomelanos dose not present significant antifungal activity.However,P.calomelanos potentiates the activity of fluconazole and both extracts inhibits the morphological changes in Candida species,indicating that they have potential pharmacological activity as modulators of fungal biology.Therefore,novel studies are required to characterize the interference of these extracts in the virulence and pathogenicity of Candida species as well as the potential of fern species to treat fungal infections.

Filmy ferns are a conspicuous epiphytic component of the temperate rain forest of southern Chile and the more abundant genus is Hymenophyllum represented by 19 species, they are a primitive fern family sharing their limited water lost control (poikilohydricity) with lower non-vascular plants, such as bryophytes and lichens. Because, carbohydrate accumulation is a desiccation tolerance mechanism proposed for desiccation-tolerant vascularized plants, the aim of this investigation was to propose a methodology for soluble carbohydrate analysis in native ferns. Preparative- TLC showed to be a simple and rapid technique for separating Hymenophyllum sugars. GC-MS analysis allowed identifying glucitol (2.0 percent), sucrose (2.0 percent), alpha or beta-melibiose (5.0 percent) and salidroside (4.4 percent) in H. cruentum carbohydrate profile from H. dentatum showed significant differences presenting only two sugars sucrose (1.4 percent) and alpha or beta-melibiose (3.2 percent). Furthermore, salidroside, an antioxidant compound, was identified only in H. cruentum. Our results suggest that H. cruentum, has higher preventive mechanisms than H. dentatum; that would allow delay the effects of desiccation (prevent a rapid dehydration) and thus survive to short periods of drought present in the study area. Due to the presence of salidroside in H. cruentum this species should be more resistant to oxidative stress that H. dentatum.


Los helechos película se pueden encontrar en el bosque templado lluvioso del sur de Chile, siendo el género más abundante Hymenophyllum representado con 19 especies. Son una familia de helechos primitivos que comparten la limitación de control de pérdida de agua (poiquilohidrícos) con plantas no vasculares, tales como briófitas y líquenes. Como el contenido de hidratos de carbono ha sido asociado a la protección de la planta durante la desecación, su análisis es una herramienta importante para dilucidar el mecanismo asociado a este fenómeno. El objetivo de esta investigación fue proponer una metodología fácil y rápida para el análisis de hidratos de carbono en helechos nativos. La CCF-preparativa permitió la separación de hidratos de carbono presentes en plantas del género Hymenophyllum. El análisis por GC-MS logró identificar glucitol (2,0 por ciento), sacarosa (2,0 por ciento), alfa o Beta-melibiosa (5.0 por ciento) y salidrosido (4,4 por ciento) en H. cruentum. El perfil de hidratos de carbono de H. dentatum mostró diferencias significativas, mostrando sólo dos compuestos sacarosa (1,4 por ciento) y alfa o beta- melibiosa (3.2 por ciento). Además, salidrosido, un compuesto antioxidante, sólo fue identificado en H. cruentum. Nuestros resultados sugieren que ante la menor tolerancia a la desecación observada previamente en H. cruentum, esta especie presenta mecanismos que le permitirían retardar los efectos de la desecación (prevención de una rápida pérdida de agua) y así sobrevivir a los periodos cortos de sequía presentes en la zona de estudio. Debido a La presencia de salidrosido en H. cruentum, esta especie debería ser más resistente al estrés oxidativo que H. dentatum.

ABSTRACT

The extreme conditions in rocky outcrops allow the occurrence of desiccation tolerant species. One strategy of these plants to withstand water shortage is the accumulation of sugars. In this paper, we report sugar levels and profile of three ferns and one lycophyte naturally hydrated growing on rocky outcrops from Southeastern Brazil. Anemia species have higher sugar contents than Doryopteris collina and Selaginella sellowii. The analyzed species have different sugar profiles. The ferns have glucose, fructose and sucrose, and the lycophyte has glucose and trehalose.


Nas condições ambientais extremas dos afloramentos rochosos ocorrem espécies tolerantes à dessecação. Uma das estratégias dessas plantas para resistir à restrição hídrica é o acúmulo de açúcares. No presente estudo, avaliamos a concentração e o perfil de açúcares de três espécies de samambaias e uma licófita, naturalmente hidratadas crescendo sobre afloramentos rochosos no sudeste do Brasil. As espécies de Anemia possuem maior concentração de açúcares em relação a Doryopteris collina e Selaginella sellowii. As espécies analisadas mostraram perfis distintos de açúcares. As samambaias apresentam glicose, frutose e sacarose, enquanto a licófita glicose e trealose.

ABSTRACT

Diversity of ferns and lycophytes from Reserva Natural Punta Lara, Buenos Aires , Argentina. Punta Lara Natural Reserve shelters the relict of the Southernmost riparian forest in the world, where the flora is threatened by the anthropic expansion and by the introduction of exotic species. In this area the ferns and lycophytes grow in particular environments as marshland, grassland and marginal forest. The aim of this work was to evaluate the diversity of ferns and lycophytes that inhabit in Punta Lara Natural Reserve. Field trips were conducted from 2006 to 2009 and local herbaria and specific bibliography were also revised. As a result of our study twenty four taxa of ferns and lycophytes were recognized. Their habit was mainly terrestrial (70%), fewer aquatic (17%) and epiphytic (13%). Five native taxa were scarcely recorded whereas two native species previously documented were not found. We assume that the main threats on ferns and lycophytes populations in Punta Lara Reserve are: removal for comercialization, invasion by exotic species and climatic fluctuations (drought periods). Hasta el año 1987 el número de helechos y licofitas citados para la Reserva Punta Lara era de 30, incluyendo taxa específicos e infraespecíficos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la diversidad de los helechos y licofitas que crecen en esta reserva, donde se halla el relicto más austral de las selvas en galería. Para llevar a cabo este estudio se realizaron viajes de campo durante los años 2006-2009 y se consultaron herbarios locales así como bibliografía especializada. Como resultado del estudio se determinaron 24 taxa de helechos y licofitas, de hábito predominantemente terrestre (70%); pocas acuáticas (17%) y epífitas (13%); dos especies exóticas, mientras que otras dos especies nativas citadas previamente no fueron halladas. Cinco taxa fueron registrados con escasa frecuencia. Se infiere que las principales causas de amenaza para las poblaciones de licofitas y helechos en la Reserva Natural Punta Lara son la extracción para su comercialización, la introducción de plantas exóticas y las fluctuaciones climáticas (periodos de sequía). Se presenta una clave de identificación de los taxa registrados y se plantean futuras estrategias de conservación de las especies consideradas vulnerables.

We have investigated how edge effects influence the fern community of Jaguarão Forest (08º 35' 49" S and 35º 15' 39" W), located in the district of Rio Formoso, Pernambuco, Brazil. A comparative analysis was made of the interior and edge of the fragment of forest, regarding the richness, abundance and diversity of ferns in the two areas. Six plots of 10 × 20 m were chosen, three in each area. A total of 381 ferns were recorded, which were distributed among 25 species, 17 genera and 12 families. The two areas (edge and interior) were found to differ, with distinct relative air humidities and temperatures (p = 0.00254 and p = 0.00019, respectively). The interior showed higher diversity (t = 7.251 and p = 0.018) and richness (t = 6.379 and p = 0.023) than the edge area, but the same abundance (t = 1.728; p = 0.226) as the edge. Regarding the composition of the flora, it was clear that the interior is a habitat completely distinct from the edge with regard to the fern community, given that only one species, Adiantum petiolatum Desv., was common to both environments. It was concluded that the edge effect causes a decrease in richness and abundance of the fern species found in Jaguarão Forest, where the more sensitive species are being replaced by species that are tolerant to the disturbance caused by the creation of an edge.


Este trabalho verificou como os efeitos de borda influenciam as comunidades de pteridófitas presentes na Mata do Jaguarão (08º 35' 49" S e 35º 15' 39" W), município de Rio Formoso, Pernambuco. O estudo foi feito através de análise comparativa entre os ambientes de interior e de borda. Para verificar a riqueza, abundância e diversidade das pteridófitas nos dois ambientes, foram estabelecidas seis parcelas de 10 × 20 m (200 m²), sendo três para cada ambiente. Foram contabilizados 381 indivíduos de pteridófitas, distribuídos em 25 espécies, 17 gêneros e 12 famílias. Os dois ambientes (interior e borda) caracterizaram-se diferentes entre si, com umidade relativa do ar e temperatura distintas (p = 0,00254 e p = 0,00019, respectivamente). O ambiente de interior apresentou maior diversidade (t = 7,251 e p = 0,018) e riqueza (t = 6,379 e p = 0,023) que o ambiente de borda, de acordo com o teste estatístico empregado (teste t pareado). A abundância, por outro lado, foi a mesma em interiores e bordas do fragmento (t = 1,728 e p = 0,226). Quanto à composição florística, ficou claro que o interior do fragmento estudado constitui um ambiente totalmente distinto da borda, no que se refere à comunidade pteridofítica, com apenas uma espécie comum aos dois ambientes, Adiantum petiolatum Desv. Assim, o presente estudo constatou que o efeito de borda causa diminuição na riqueza e abundancia das espécies de pteridófitas ocorrentes na Mata do Jaguarão, com a existência de substituição das espécies mais sensíveis pelas espécies tolerantes aos impactos causados por esse efeito.
